I will be going out on Tuesday to check them all and to make sure all the red lights are blinking on them. and to download the the data from hobos 71,84,70 and 75. Randy 2 dec, hobos at handar sites launched 2 dec, remaining stations 3 dec, except for 77, 46 and 49. 1100-1230, hobos deployed at the 5 stations and Handars launched. Snow measurements made with tape measure, about 20 readings at each station. The values may be overestimates because of trapped air in the grass layer. Hilltop 5 cm, range of 0-15 cm \\ Slope 10 cm, range of 0-25 cm \\ Bottom 5 cm, range 0-10 cm. \\ Sage bush 7.5 cm, range 6-9 cm. \\ Base 4 cm, range 0-12 cm. \\ Main tower 3 cm, range 0-8 cm. \\ 3 December \\ Install the remaining 8 hobos 1430 and 1600. \\ 4 December 2001 \\ morning sunny, cloudy in afternoon, light snow evening. \\ downloaded handar data, early afternoon. \\ approx. 0900 removed thermocouple at level above 5.7 m to inspect, then reinserted, \\ approx. 1005 replace thermocouple at 5.7 m. It looked fine but had not been responding. Finally straightened out mid afternoon. \\ base 10% snow cover, drifts to 6", soil moisture 4.6% for bare ground \\ brush sage 80% snow cover, 30% > 3", 9.1% soil moisture under snow \\ bottom snow cover 40% up to 5" wet surface 14.4 % soil moisture \\ slope snow cover 70% up to 6" depth, soil moisture for bare ground 4.6% \\ hilltop snow cover 60% up to 5", bare wet surface 6.4 % soil moisture. \\ 5 December \\ sunny, windy \\ 6 December, windy light snow, blowing snow. \\ had to relaunch T46, 49 and 77. they never properly launched. \\ 7. about 5 cm new snow. Partly sunny morning. download Handar data mid afternoon \\ 8 December, sunny -13 C, close to 100% snow cover. deployed solar panels 1500-1600, the one at main station is cracked and appears to be not working. 1600-1700, tore down hot film/heated handar. \\ 9 Dec, sunny -13 C, 80-90% snow cover, in afternoon and early evening made manpack experiments. \\ 10 Dec. sunny -19 C 80% snow cover, weak winds, shallow flows and sudden warming. \\ 15 Dec mid-slope Handar very spikey 30 Dec mid-slope Hobo 38 does not download and freezes launchers because upgrade never enstalled. 18 Feb. snow cover only about 10-15%. Much of the north side of the hill is well-covered with snow depths averaging about 10 cm with some areas up to 30 cm. Set up manpack stakes. Spacing is not regular due to locating stakes next to thermistor stations and avoiding snow drifts etc. We have extended the manpack track to the north to the top of a small rise, down into a low area and up onto a sage covered region. 19 Feb. Trace of snow over night. Hobo 38 was replaced with hobo 69. Hobo 38 will be upgraded with new circuit board later. The bar codes for the manpack stakes were put on. 20 Feb. 21 Feb. Manpack morning run. Hobo 69 brought in at 1030 (roughly) for laptop download. Mid-slope handar replaced at 1335. 22-23, very warm, highs near 10. 24 Feb snowfall began about 2000 25 Feb snowfall ended by 0500. Sage albedo probably substantially reduced by catching considerable snow.
